2 Shot Molding

2 Shot Molding

We are equipped with the ability to mold parts using two separate plastics.

2-shot molding, also known as two-shot injection molding, is an advanced manufacturing process used to create plastic parts that have two different materials (or colors) injected into the same mold, in two separate stages, to form a single, integrated part.

Here’s how the 2-shot molding process works:

  1. First Shot: The first material (usually a plastic resin) is injected into the mold, filling one part of the mold cavity. This is typically the harder, more durable material, and it forms the base layer of the part.

  2. Mold Rotation or Tool Switching: After the first material has cooled or partially set, the mold either rotates or the part is moved to another mold cavity (in a two-part system). This allows the second material to be injected without mixing with the first.

  3. Second Shot: The second material, which could be a softer material or a different color of plastic, is then injected into the mold. The second material bonds chemically with the first material, creating a seamless, multi-material part.

  4. Cooling and Ejection: Once the second material has been injected and cooled, the mold is opened, and the finished part is ejected.

Benefits of 2-Shot Molding:

  • Multi-material parts: You can combine two different materials, like hard and soft plastics, in one part, without needing separate assembly steps.
  • Integrated design: It allows for complex parts that have both rigidity and flexibility, such as grips, handles, or gaskets.
  • Cost-effective: By eliminating the need for secondary assembly processes (like bonding or welding), it can save time and reduce labor costs.
  • Aesthetics: Different colors or textures can be achieved, making it ideal for cosmetic parts like buttons or consumer products.

This technique is widely used in industries such as automotive, electronics, medical devices, and consumer goods. If this sounds like what you are trying to do, please reach out to us at sales@chemplastinc.com or visit us at 1002 Texas Parkway in Stafford.
